MP’s warning over horticultural skills

Britain’s horticultural industry is in crisis because not enough home grown talent is being recruited to be trained in the wide range of skills required and the main reason, according to Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell and local Tree Bench company, is that successive governments and the education establishment have not seen horticulture as something to encourage young people to pursue as a career.

Sir Bob backs independent ambulance service inquiry

Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell said: “I would welcome an independent inquiry into the East of England Ambulance Service – including whether it was sensible for the last Labour government to set up such a huge organisation covering the counties of Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.  I think this may in part be responsible for the criticisms of its performance.

Silent vigil for freedom of speech

On Thursday at noon Colchester's Liberal Democrat MP Sir Bob Russell attended a two-minutes silent vigil in the historic Westminster Hall, Houses of Parliament in tribute to those murdered in Paris the previous day.  He is pictured, after the vigil, with fellow MPs Stephen Metcalfe (South Basildon and East Thurrock), Robert Halfon (Harlow) and John Whittingdale (Maldon).

MP's Tesco statement

Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell received a personal letter this morning from Tesco’s Chief Executive Officer, informing him of the company’s decision not to proceed with a superstore on the former Barracks site off Butt Road.  Sir Bob “I immediately contacted Tesco and we will be holding a meeting to discuss the future of this site.

MP’s warning about drones

Regulations about drones – unmanned aerial vehicles – need to be reviewed because of the security threat they pose as well as an invasion of privacy.  That was the request made in the House of Commons by Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell during Home Office Questions.

Colchester MP in Iraq

News that several hundred British troops are to go to Iraq – in a training role to assist Iraqi forces defend the country against terrorist groups – did not come as a surprise to Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell because he was in Iraq last week on a visit with the Defence Select Committee.

The committee had three days of intensive meetings and briefings with British military and diplomatic personnel and also with Iraqi political leaders, including the President.

Switch our street lights back on

Colchester Lib Dem MP Sir Bob Russell is backing calls for to end the night time switch-off of Colchester's street lights.  Last night, Lib Dem led Colchester Borough Council voted to ask Essex County Council to enable the Colchester street lights to remain on all night.

The Lib Dems want to move to low-energy LED streetlights, which would save Essex taxpayers MORE money than switching off most streetlights during the night.
