MP welcomes fall in road deaths

The fall in the number of people killed on Britain's roads - last year they fell to 2,500, the lowest since records began in 1926 - has been welcomed by Colchester MP Bob Russell who is Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Road Safety Group.

Mr Russell said: "Successive Governments, and all involved in road safety matters, are to be congratulated on the huge reduction in road deaths from the record 8,000 which occurred in 1966. With the number of vehicles on our roads increasing, the drop is even more impressive.

"However, too many people are still being killed. We must all work even harder to aim for zero, for while this may seem an impossibility by aiming for zero we will reduce still further the number of people who are killed each year."

Mr Russell is also Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Justice for Road Victims, the Parliamentary voice for the charity RoadPeace.
