12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 22nd Jul 2008

Following lobbying by MPs, including Bob Russell MP, the Government has accepted that Prison Officers deserve special recognition.

Up to now only those in the Police, Fire Service, Ambulance Service and the Military could qualify for a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on completion of 20 years service. This has now been extended to operational staff in the UK Prison Service.

Liberal Democrat MP Mr Russell today praised the work and dedication of those working within the Prison Service: "I am delighted that the important role of the staff and officers working within our Prisons will finally be recognised.

"Their work goes far beyond the locking up of prisoners. I have always, been impressed by the level of dedication which members of the Prison Service show."
